Science, Peace, and Leadership

Introduction and Course Materials

Welcome to Carver Classrooms!

Carver Classrooms are a series of mini courses taught by university faculty on how their specific areas of study can be applied to enriching Christian life and leadership. Each course consists of three to four brief videos exploring how a deeper understanding of a particular subject area can impact the Church. The videos are accompanied by lesson summaries, discussion questions, and supplemental resources for further learning and engagement. These free, online courses are available to anyone through a generous grant from Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City.

How can Christians think about science? What pastoral challenges arise from scientific debates? And how might Jesus think about science? Taught by Washington University scientist and professor Joshua Swamidass, this course seeks to explore how Christians can engage with science thoughtfully and faithfully while seeking opportunities to make peace where there’s conflict and lead others to do the same.

Before proceeding with our exploration of these questions, please take the time to fill out the short, four question survey that follows. If you are doing this program with a group, encourage them to create a free account and take the survey before your first meeting. After completing the course, please have all users take the post-course survey as well. Your participation helps us understand the impact of Carver Classrooms and how we can best serve future Carver Classrooms users.

On the “Materials” tab of this page (as well as at the links below), you will find a facilitator guide, group discussion guides, and resources for further learning. All materials are free to download and distribute for you and your group. Each of the course materials is downloadable and free to share with anyone. If you are a group facilitator, please look over the facilitator guide before beginning the course. It may be helpful to print out a discussion guide for each participant in your group as well. If you are going through this course individually, we recommend taking notes on the sessions and reflecting on the content and application questions provided.

We hope you enjoy this Carver Classrooms course and that it will help broaden the horizons of your Christian community!
